The lightsuit segment of Sweetgrass Productions’, “Afterglow”, turned heads (and rightly so) after it’s release in 2014. Though the focus of their movies is skiing, the cinematography is often just as impressive as the skiers. The light on the snow makes for some interesting visuals as it is pushed around and follows in the wake of the skiers, displaying the flow of air as they drop into their lines.
I like this segment because the focus is transferred from the skiers to the snow. I love the way the snow sprays in the wake of the skiers, giving viewers a glimpse of how the air is flowing around their accelerating bodies. The flakes of snow suspended in the wake of each turn is artfully lit by the custom lightsuits worn by each skier. Combining this with the music and grace of the skiing resulted in one of the most talked about and beautiful segments of skiing I have ever seen.

1st Place. This is a great piece. I’m not a big skier, but everything from the skiing, the lighting, and the cinematography was well done. It almost looks like they are comets traveling on land.
