The black background against the white smoke gives the image some great contrast although I would probably mess around with the contrast a bit to remove the background inconsistencies. The rings were a very cool idea and gives the photo a bit of mysterious feel.

Cool capture, but the background is a bit of a distraction. Setting the black value in post-production would help

I like how the photo shows two smoke rings showing how the flow propagates with increased time. It seems that finding the right focal length for a photo like this would be challenging. Great work!

This is a very cool picture. The travelling smoke rings and surrounding fog give a clear line for the viewer to follow through the image, which draws their eye to the action. The flow is clearly seen, however there is a slight lack of contrast from the background. The high amount of noise does detract from the image, as does the illuminated background.

Very visually appealing, with contrast between background and rings, however in the future you might want to try and smooth out the background, as the light reflecting of the crinkles is distracting

I think this is a cool image, I like that you did it in black and white. However I think making the ring pop more would put this picture over the edge, increase the contrast.

I like the contrast of the smoke and the background, however the effect might be better looking if it was consistent (blacker). The flow phenomena is awesome, nice work displaying the flow. I like how you have eliminated shadows, although your shutter speed and ISO were a little bit high; you could clear up some of the grain in your image, as well as an increase of the depth of field, unless having the second smoke ring be fuzzy was what you were going for by means of artistic license.

Great idea trying to capture two smoke rings, it adds depth to the image that wouldn’t be captured otherwise. However, the smoke rings became a little fuzzy. It looks like the camera focused on the background. Perhaps heightening the contrast would make the smoke a little more crisp.

This image’s color contrast is used very well. Light gray and black can be used to create an old film-noir feel to the image. The flow of the smoke is fluid, but the framing of the image seems to be just a bit far to the left. This does clearly show the rings of the smoke phenomena. What I think is unique about this image is that the ring are going up instead of down. The small details of the smoke seems to be invisible, and this may be due to the image having low quality. That’s fine. Smoke and its details are hard to capture. I can tell there was some strong control for this image and it most likely took several attempts to replicate. Smoke is fast and the focus can go all over the place. In my opinion, the best part of this image is the motion at which a person sees it. Most people naturally watch things go from left to right, and the rings flow in a way that we see the big ring first, on the left, and then we see on the smaller ring on the right. Watching images go from left to right is a common practice in film. Highlights of the image appear on the rings themselves which have the most light on them. One thing that may have a greater effect is having every part of the smoke contain light and blurring out the aftereffects of the smoke on the bottom; this could help make the entire image black and white instead of having a gradient of color. It still looks great, but having only two colors instead of the whole gray scale could make it even better.

Photo is artistic and interesting to see how the smoke rings vary in density giving it unique look. The flow illustrates a clear ring and the details are visible. The photo could use more contrast and possibly a faster shutter speed.

I love how smoke interacts, the rings are clear and you can see all the smoke around. The only thing I would say that could make this better would be some more color. I like that two rings contrast each other (one more defined than the other). Image is a little fuzzy but you can still see cool detail.

1.Smoke ring looks good. I Like the contrast.
2.The background is a bit distracting.
3.I think playing with the light location could be improved

The intent was realized but it could be more aesthetically pleasing if you edit it in a program that can increase the contrast

Art: Interesting image. Add more contrast to make the background more black and the white of the smoke brighter. Flow: Easy to see direction of flow. Try changing angles to capture the flow. Maybe an angled image will show more of the trailing smoke. Photographic Technique: Try to focus more on the details of the smoke rings and blur the background out.

I like that the image captures two vortex rings at different phases of their propagation away from the orifice. Good use of a black backdrop to isolate the subject. If you tried to take this image again I’d be curious to see if motion could still be frozen with a slightly slower shutter speed and back off a little on ISO. Increasing lighting may help out with image quality.

The contrast is vivid but could be a little clearer. The smoke rings are very well seen and again could be brought to more attention with some editing.

The vertical composition of the vapor rings rising is visually pleasing. The well formed smoke ring above the other ring rising from the vapor cloud is also excellent. The details of the flow are visible. The specific controlled and reproducible nature of the flow may not be easily achieved. The contrast is good to show the nature of vapor smoke without looking artifically digitized.

The Art had no distracting elements as the photo was cropped correctly. The flow is reproducible and clearly illustrated. There isn’t a full contrast range, but since the picture is in black and white, the contrast stands out such that the smoke is visible.

I like how the photo displays super fine detail of all the intricate swirls and rings of the smoke ring. This detail really displays the flow visualization where you can see it from the user all the way to the ring. I think a higher contrast with darker blacks and brighter whites would really help the image pop

The flow in this image is highlighted pretty well, but I think the technique could be changed to reveal interesting physics from closer up.

Art: The black and white effect highlights the ‘smoke in a dark room’ aesthetic. There is a good feel to the photo, but has a slightly distracting background. Ripples are visible.

Flow: It is not clear what is happening in the photo without the explanation, however once you realize that the smoke rings pass through each other it is a very interesting flow phenomenon.

Photographic technique: Shadows are very detailed, however the image is lacking any ‘pure’ whites or blacks. The whole image is fairly greyed out. Very high ISO reveals quite a bit of noise in the image as well.

I like how the movement of the vapor cloud is very clear. The lighting in the top right corner is a little distracting and softens the black backdrop. The color choice of the white clouds on the black works really well together.

This photo captures a fast moving subject very well. The photo very clearly illustrates the phenomena of a fog ring which is good. I would say that contrast may want to be increased.

    – I am fond of use of fog and light applications.
    – Flow is clearly illustrated.
    – Intent was simple and easily realized, the lighting reminds me of an old movie.
    – One thing I would change is flattening out the drop cloth in the background, because there is a small wrinkle.

Nice composition. I like that the contrast between the fog and the background isn’t too strong . I would try this again with a lower ISO and better artificial lighting to get rid of the noise. Higher f-stop might help with focusing on the fog.

The color contrast is very dramatic, which makes the photo appealing to the eyes. Maybe trying to increase the whites and black slightly would make it even more dramatic. You can clearly see what is happening. The spacial placement is nice, slightly off to the left instead of straight on.

I like the Idea. Just wish I could blow smoke rings. I think with a few tweaks the image could pop even more. There is a little bit of noise in the photo which could be attributed to the high iso of 6000. A way this could be accomplished would be dropping the iso and decreasing the shutter speed. This will let more natural light in so you can still see the ring but have less noise. I like the framing and it looks like it is in greyscale which I like.

Art: The color contrast between the smoke and the background is very dramatic, but it could be a little sharper.
Flow: The flow is understandable and easily recognized.
Photographic technique: The background is slightly distracting, but that could be easily remedied with Photoshop or another photograph altering software.

Art: Interesting to see two smoke rings on the same axis, very beautiful.
Flow: Details are cool to see in the actual rings and the thinner trails.
Photo: nice contrast range with white smoke and black background.

Art: The image is artistically beautiful in contrasting the black and white. Maybe next time if you can flatten out the background a little more to be more uniform.
Flow: I love the difference between the controlled ring versus the dispersing ring.
Photographic technique: The background offsets the image very well. Possibly just add more contrast.

    A. you did a very good job making sure there were no distracting elements in this photo
    B. Smoke rings are a very interesting flow to me and this picture perfectly illustrates it.
    C. The contrast between the smoke and background is great however it is a little blurry which was probably hard because of the soft borders of the smoke

I think you did a really good job with the setup. For a more crisp image, I would suggest pulling the image into adobe lightroom to get the background to contrast better.

The image illustrates the ring effect clearly. It is hard to tell for me tell if it is focused upon the back ring or front ring. I am curious how it may enhance the contrast if you were to pull the background. It may enhance the smoke ring phenomena by pulling out the similar texture and colors from the upper section.

Photo has great contrast, more lighting on either side would increase contrast as well. The focus of the image is at the front of the photograph, yet the rings are in the “back”. More focus there would make the rings pop out even more.
