Paint, Milk, and Food Dye Excited at Low Frequencies by Ryan Daniel

Paint, Milk, and Food Dye Excited at Low Frequencies by Ryan Daniel

Milk, white latex paint, and food coloring are excited using an 8″ woofer. A tone generator was used to produce low frequency sin waves and amplified to the woofer to excite the fluid and display a standing wave with nodes clearly visible.

Great idea to excite the fluid using a woofer. And good job experimenting with the viscosity of the fluid (by adding milk to latex paint) until it did exactly what you wanted it to do. I really like the use of lighting and shadows to show the slight spiral effect of the droplet, it dramatizes the reaction of the woofer vibrating the fluid. Good use of soft light blue dye, not fully mixed in the milk and paint. It was probably pretty tough capturing this close-up image in great focus, but you did it well. Nice job!

Cool idea for a flow vis photo. This macro was well executed with nice focus at the right place in the photo. Timing was great too.

Really stunning contrast. The light spots are a tiny bit distracting, and could maybe be edited out. The image is very dramatic with the shadows. Well done.

It’s interesting how the excited fluid makes mountain like structures. The close focus really contributes positively to the image!

The contrast of the milk is amazing. I love how you can see the physics and fluid flow easily.

Art: The color contrast between the background and the colors in the liquid is great.
Flow: The flow is quickly understandable and recognized.
Photographic technique: The focus on the fluid is fantastic.

Really cool photo. I would say that There could be a little more dye in the photo. I was thinking that some extra color would really hit it home. I like the consistent pattern.

This photo is very crisp. I also like how the liquid is not fully mixed together. The lighting of the photo really makes it stand out. Great work!

Cool idea for a fluid project. I like the dye used, the light blue and white. Good contrast, can see from white to black.

I really like the uniform nature of the peaks, and the lighting is exceptional. The subtle blue color gives the photo a very calming feel.

The focus is very crisp in the center of the image and the flat lighting minimizes any reflections off the surface off of the egg carton shapes from by the sound waves. I would really enjoy having more focus outside of the center area but perhaps this was not the intent or attainable in the setup. The dye added was a very good addition as it highlights the contours and textures on the surface very well.

It is very interesting to see the frequency of the sine wave being transferred into the milk and the pattern it forms. I really enjoy the shadows on the “amplitude” peaks. The slight dye adds a nice touch to the image. Great capture.

Really cool picture, love how crisp the photo is. Love the symmetry of the photo. Would have been cool to have more color interactions.

I think the colors of your experiment work very well. The lighting makes the extrusions crisp and it’s well done.

Very crisp image, well focused and good shutter speed. The contrast between the whites the shadows and the mixing blue is excellent. Nice job with the lighting.

Nice symmetry in your photo, with some pleasing textures. The only critique i have is using a softer light (keep the shadows though they’re cool) just limit the white spots in the reflection of the paint.

    – Great photo!
    – It really has a nice cream/blue color to it and is well resolved.
    – Good use of old sub and wave generator.

This photo is really nice, the focus is pretty clear, the lighting and shadows creates a nice effect. Really fascinating photo, it would be interesting to see a video of this phenomenon. Really nice photo.

I really like the way that the shadows are cast by the flow in the image. this illustrates the texture of the photo very well. This is a nice mix of color seeping in from the top corner. i like the uniform flow of all the shapes in an organized pattern.
