The artist, Corrie White, creates images by dropping dyed cream into water then flips the images 180 degrees. This produces what looks like a milky smoke plume. The artist makes the viewer believe there is upward motion by creating a visual that is recognizable. However, the viewer has to double check since the density of the fluid is different than smoke. My favorite part about this piece is the time it commands the viewer to analyze it.
Third Place. I love how simple yet confusing this image is, especially at first. The smoke plume looks like upside down, which it is, but it also looks so beautiful even though it is “wrong”. I really like the idea behind this picture.
Second place. The sharp contrast between dyed cream and water makes the formed sculpture really stand out. This won my vote for the simplicity and beauty of the photgraph.
First Prize. I really like the shape of the fluid overall. Like the description states, there was something familiar about the fluid shape, but I couldn’t figure it out at first. Flipping the picture 180 degrees made you appreciate what was happening more than identifying the scenario.
Third Place: I like the effect that takes place as the cream diffuses in water. This pattern seems familiar in the sense that we see smoke act similarly, but the additional disc and drop at the water’s surface makes the viewer rethink their initial perception
