Clouds 2nd // Nathan Gallagher

Clouds 2nd // Nathan Gallagher

Variety of clouds facing west as the sun sets at 4:18 pm in Chicago, IL

These clouds are likely a combination of mostly stratus and altostratus clouds. Below is a skew-t diagram taken approximately 2 hours after this image was taken. From the skew-t diagram, we can see the clouds are forming around 6,000 meters above sea level and higher. This would place them in the range that mostly  altostratus clouds form, (based on the flowvis guidebook), which corroborates the claim that these are altostratus. The altostratus clouds are likely the darker clouds as they are low enough to interact with light. The lighter clouds are likely cirrus intortus clouds, which are characterized by a wispy, splotchy appearance and occur at a much higher altitude. As the skew-t diagram shows a cape of 0, these clouds are stable. This makes sense as these clouds are very flat and this image was taken during the winter.

It is very interesting to see some of these photos from settings other than colorado. I like this wispy nature of the cirrus clouds over the midwest. Overall a very cool image

Super classic, I love the colors and aspect ratio of your image. The clouds look similar to those that I’ve seen in towns bordering the pacific ocean, so maybe the great lakes can help create similar clouds to those that the pacific creates?

The dynamic range covered in the background alongside the dark foreground creates a really interesting composition.

Besides the wide range of bright colors seen in the sunset in this image, my favorite part about it is the dark flag and skyline silhouettes that give the image a striking look.

I agree with you that the wide aspect ratio is cool, but it might also be cool to try cropping it so that the sun is either in the middle or on a third line. The colors and silhouettes are really nice!

Beautiful photo of the city landscape, I really like the photo’s composition and I think the flag + the plane’s trail creates a nice rule of thirds effect

I love the range of colors you have from the yellow/orange of the sunset to the dark blue of a twilight sky. You did a great job capturing the flag and buildings as just shadows and shapes and don’t take away from the beautiful sky.
