Singing Bowl

My video shows the resonance inside the singing bowl reacting with water. The singing bowl is an interesting instrument that resembles an inverted bell and can be sounded by simply striking it. But an even more interesting way to play it is to use a kind of wooden mallet wrapped in suede and drag it along the rim of the bowl. Due to the stick-slip mechanism, the friction between the mallet and the bowl creates a continuous vibration, resulting in continuous beautiful harmonies. When the bowl is filled with water, this resonance can be visualized. Actually, this has a similar principle to what I did in the Team Second assignment (I used sand on a vibrating board to show the resonance). These two phenomena both form Chladni patterns, which are patterns formed by the standing waves of resonance.

The video was filmed at 120fps and played at 24fps, so it’s 5x slow motion. Since the camera was only able to capture slow motion video at 1080p resolution, and the poor lighting conditions caused a lot of noise, this video used AI enhancement to enlarge to 2160p (4K) resolution and remove most of the noise. I’m very impressed with the AI performance.

Acknowledgments: Thanks to my team members Abhishek Raut and Alexandr Vassilyev, who played the singing bowl and provided suggestions on the filming.

I think you captured this phenomenon very well. The way you recorded this helps the audience understand what is going on

    Hi Haotian,

I thought your experiment was very cool, and unique. I also really liked the process your video shows to capture your flow and thought it was informative. Good job!

I really like how you edited this video (and the music too!). And I appreciate that you chose really interesting subject matter for your video. I would like to see this video with a slightly more diffuse light source that captures the ripples slightly more clearly. Otherwise, I think you did a great job!
