When a candle is blown out, the melted wax at the top of the wick drops drastically in temperature.  The tiny droplets of liquid wax are no longer able to combust and are then released upwards into the air as smoke due to convection.

This picture is very unique! At first I was unable to tell what is was. I really like it though! I think the bright blue made it very interesting. I also really like the flow of the smoke, its cool how it looks like its going in all different directions. I think if you were to redo this it would be cool to see what it would look like if you were focused on the smoke more.

I believe in class you explained that the blue color in your image comes from the source of light rather than post-process image manipulation. Still, the monochromatic palette lends an artistic effect, whether it was intentional or not. To me, the color conveys a somber mood, especially paired with the subject, which depicts an extinguishing of warmth, light and life. Even in low light, I have an easy time of picking out the flow against the background. Did you consider digitally duplicating and repositioning the non-black parts of your image to fill more of the frame? If not, I’d try it – the image may end up exuding more emotion in a way that you like.

This is a cool picture. It’s much easier to see on a computer screen rather than on the projector. I really like the color scheme, but the picture seems a little, unbalanced, for lack of a better word. My focus is immediately drawn to the bottom, where the brightest lights are, and since the smoke is so subtle, it’s easy to overlook. I think a change in lighting would help, and maybe even cropping so that all we see is the smoke.

I would say the lighting is not great and could capture the smoke a little better. More lighting might help with resolution as well. I do like the stillness of the image with so much smoke being visible.

I like the blue color in this photo. The sweeping smoke has a nice shape. However, I feel as though the candle top doesn’t add a lot to the composition. Maybe there could be a way to bring out more contrast in the smoke as well such as better lighting.

That looks very cool, I think there’s a lot of potential here. Some additional lighting to highlight the smoke I think would pull it together. Well done tho! The blue is great

I think the framing and the focus are really well done. The smoke is the subject of the picture, but the base of the candlestick is what caught my eye. If the smoke were more visible, I think the twirling effect would be emphasized more.

Unique candle color makes the image mask with mysterious atmosphere. Due to the limit of senser, the clarity of the image perhaps needs some improvement.

The black background gives a really good contrast to the blue coloring of the smoke. It would be very interesting to see multiple colors of light

I thought the image was framed well. The flow of smoke is pictured well. The base almost has an abstraction to it with the lower resolution.

The blue on black with the lighter highlights make the image interesting. Have you thought of using a laser or other light source to highlight the smoke.

The blue color in this picture is very appealing and the smoke created some interesting shapes but it is almost too dark overall to see what is happening. The bright candle also draws attention away from the smoke.

The blue smoke with the black background makes a really cool image. The smoke is a little hard to see but I think this was an awesome flow idea.

i really like the deep blue color of this picture, as well as the wisps of smoke coming off. The smoke is a little grainy looking, it might be because the ISO is too high. Otherwise it’s a great photo.

The image is very abstract, which I think is exciting since the viewer has to ponder what they are looking at. I’m not an expert, but maybe increasing ISO sensitivity might make a clearer image.

The natural blue color really pops on the black background! Why did you use such low light? Was the light hidden from the smoke through the candle?

the blue swirl that you can see is a cool idea and I do like how its in a completely black background, however the image doesn’t do the setup justice so a better picture would be awesome

  • It is almost a great photo, the smoke is visible when the room is dark! Focus is very good, sounds like you have a good plan for a new photo.

Good idea no one else seemed to use candle light. Hard to see exactly what is going on in the picture. It is a very alluring color of blue. Excited to see the second iteration.

The blue smoke is a neat effect and I think you should try and maintain the colors when you redo the picture. Definitely need some more light though, maybe even just a wider aperture?

The darkness of the background really draws out the smoke of the photo. Photographing smoke seems very tough but I’m sure over the semester with some minor tweaking photos like this will come out much quicker.

  • I think this is a good idea. The blue is neat, because it’s not the color you are used to seeing with a candle. Like you said, it is a bit hard to see with the darkness of the image, but I think it will be cool to see when you re-do it!

I like the contrast between the blue subject and very dark background. There is a lot of negative space, it would be cool to have the smoke more as the subject of the image

The blue color variations on the black background really pop and draw your eye in. Its very intriguing and the image is focused and cropped well. It’s hard to see what’s actually happening though. If you had better lighting it may improve your image.
