Smooth Flow Over a Pyramid
As the second project and first one as a team, “Team First” is intended to improve our skills by using all the ideas and tools of each team member. Everyone can help with more complex fluid flow and with a setup that requires multiple moving parts. Our goal was to create an image of a wave from a side view, but we weren’t set on any specific way of making this happen. Professor Hertzberg suggested that we use the CU Boulder ITLL Building flume (explained later). When we finally used it, we found that we could dam up water, then release it all at once and make it hit a wall at the far end, creating a wave. Hana is a master with the camera and took photos from her tripod. Eli was out “Lighting guy” and Ibrahim was our food coloring dropper. I would dam the water and then give a countdown of when I would release it. This allowed Ibrahim to drop the food coloring at the correct moment and informed Hana of when to start taking photos. After taking many photos of the wave, we wanted to try some other things. We found a pyramid shaped block that water could flow over and just had some fun dropping food coloring to see what happened. It turns out that it looked very cool, so I decided to take my photos of this and make some small adjustments to get a good demonstration of the physics and get a superb photo. Thus, it ended up that the rest of the team chose the wave photos, while I chose this flow photo, although the setup was nearly identical.

Very cool design experiment. Almost like a “red” vs “blue” photograph. The odd angles give this photo a sense of abstract art
Wow, very cool. The geometric shapes mixed with the organic nature of the food coloring is very interesting. Cool physics going on here, too. Well done.
Clear capture of the process. What is the Reynolds number associated with the different points of interest where a turbulent and laminar flow is separated? I really like how you made such a good color contrast of this image.
good showing of the physics. great choice of colors. makes for a dramatic image.
High contrast of the image made a mysterious sense. The hydraulic jump was clearly captured in the image and some turbulence existed in the red part.
This is a striking image! Great job with the composition of the image and the use of color to demonstrate a powerful flow phenomenon. The red drop is interesting to look at but doesn’t seem to add a lot to the theme of laminar vs turbulent flow.
Very discretely/smooth cool! There’s very cool lines going on here and it’s interesting to see the diffusion of the blue down stream but held together before hand
Good visualization of the different types of flow that are occurring at this point in time. I like the choice of colors along with the contrast of the black and white.
I really like how you used two different food colorings and the strong contrast between the light background and the black “thing” that the flow is moving over.
The color contrast between the two colors with background white is awesome. The image shows a great example of physics on the flow.
I am a huge fan of this photo. Very modern and creative. The high contrast between the white background and the black water as well as the red vs blue is great looking. I think you could have made the shadow on the right side of the image disappear.
The two colors of this image really make it awesome, They are extremely vibrant and the dark lines on the top of the flow that make it very visible.
I’ve said this on every one of these posts but I love how you all used different colors. This is cool because it seems very, very smooth compared to the other photos. The surface of the water doesn’t appear to be moving at all, but it’s clearly illustrated by the dispersion of the food coloring underneath.
I like the contrasting colors. It is simple but powerful.
Very nice contract between both light and dark, and the two colors you chose to use. To me it looks like the flow is moving from right to left because of the blue diffusion towards the left of the image.
This is a cool picture and I like the red white and blue theme in the image. The only thing I would say is to try an rotate your picture and attempt to straighten out the table.
I really like the simplicity of this image, the addition of the food coloring makes the transition from laminar to turbulent easily visible. Great job.
Really like the color contrast of the red and blue. What is the flow moving over? What is the top layer of the water, it looks really dark compared to the others team images?
The two separate colors are very nice. I like the definitive laminar to turbulent flow that was captured over the triangle.
Like the almost pyramid included in the picture. Looks like the two colors are about to touch on the top. Like the separation of the colors though. Nice example of flow.
