This is a photo of instantaneous flow over a sphere that has an R = 15,000. At this critical Reynolds number, you can see a laminar boundary layer formed at the center of the sphere, then quickly peel off into turbulent flow. It is very interesting to see just how a slight change in Reynolds number affects flow patterns. This is also a very eloquent photo as the contrast in flow patterns juxtaposed with the black and white color scheme creates an interesting combination.
