Depicted in the video is a pool of ferrofluid in a plastic container interacting with a spinning magnet beneath. The magnet is attached to a speed control AC motor, allowing the angular velocity of the magnet to be adjusted by the user. I didn’t have my camera when my group met to take photos of the ferrofluid together, so I made this setup on my own at home. Thanks to Dr. Hertzberg for lending out the ferrofluid, Pat Maguire for the magnets, and my teammates Sander Leondaridis, Tristan Martinez, and Abdullah Alkaldhi for helping enable this project.

I like the decision to capture the motion of the fluid in a video, I don’t think I have seen anything like this before.

Mesmerizing with music and spinning – good music choice!

I think you used a good amount of ferrofluid and a strong enough magnet to get a good look at the normal field instability.

Really nice video, what inspired you to catch the fluid being “spun” like that by the magnet?

I really liked the setup of the equipment. I thought that it was very creative and unique! Very good angle of the camera as well!.
